What happens when school is canceled or delayed

Happy New Year!  Since the winter weather cycle is upon us, I wanted to remind you about what happens for AC if the districts have delays or cancellations.

On one-hour or two-hour school delays, Academic Challenge will run an abbreviated class schedule. Students go to the home school at the delayed time and then will be bused to Academic Challenge.

For Level 1-3 Students:

  • On a one-hour or one-and-a-half hour delay, go to school at the delayed time, and take the AC bus to Del Tech an hour later than normal (example:  if the normal pick-up time is 7:45 am, on a one-hour delay the pick-up time is 8:45 am).  Students who are picked up for the afternoon session would be picked up at the normal time.  Students who are dropped off after the morning session would be dropped off at the normal time.

  • On a two-hour delay*, go to school at the delayed time and ALL Level 1-3 AC students, both AM and PM half day students ride the AC AM bus over to Del Tech two hours later than normal  (example: if the normal AM pick-up time is 7:45 am, on a two-hour delay the pick-up time is 9:45 am).  Students who are usually half-day will have a study hall at Delaware Tech while the other session is meeting.

*   Cape Henlopen School District: On a two-hour delay, go to school at the delayed time and Level 1-3 students who usually ride the AM bus, will ride over to Del Tech two hours later than normal leaving at 9:45 am.  Level 1-3 students who usually ride the mid-day bus, will take the bus from Cape at 11:30 am.

  • In the event that the home school district or Delaware Tech closes, students should log in to their MyDTCC account to check email and D2L Announcements for communication from their instructors. AC Level 1-3 classes will either meet via Zoom at their regularly scheduled times on Tuesday or instructors will post work for students to complete asynchronously. Students should also visit the Academic Challenge website, www.academicchallengetheflyingcow.com, for the most up-to-date information. We will post an announcement if Level 1-3 Academic Challenge in person classes are canceled due to weather.

For Level 4-5 Students:

  • If Del Tech classes are not canceled and your district has a delay or cancelation, students should consult with parents about driving conditions and proceed to class only if conditions are safe. Students have an excused absence and may make up work, contacting their instructor for guidance, if they have to miss class.

When Delaware Technical Community College closes, an announcement in red is posted on the website at www.dtcc.edu. The college will also deliver an automated call, text message, or email to the phone number or email address provided in the Delaware Technical Community College Alert system. The parent or student can adjust the settings in the Delaware Technical Community College Alert system by logging in to my.dtcc.edu and choosing the Alert tab from the menu bar.

When school is canceled or delayed, classes and scheduled activities are usually rescheduled or moved online to keep students safe and on track. Teachers often update students through email or school apps, and assignments may be adjusted to reflect lost time. For many universities with diverse climates, including places like the university of sydney, cancellations are rare, but academic plans still include guidelines for handling unexpected closures—from weather to emergencies. Communication, flexibility, and staying updated with official notices help students manage changes without falling behind.

When school is canceled or delayed, classes are usually rescheduled, moved online, or adjusted to ensure students don’t miss out on learning time. Schools often use digital platforms, assignments, or recorded sessions to maintain continuity. This flexible approach to education is similar to how leading institutions manage disruptions efficiently—while also considering planning and resources, including factors like Massachusetts Institute of Technology cost, which reflect the investment required to support high-quality, adaptable learning environments.
